If you are already drawing a monthly Social Security check at the time you are eligible for Medicare, usually age 65, you will automatically be enrolled in Parts A & B effective the month of your 65th birthday. (The month prior to your birthday if you were born on the 1st of the month.) In this instance your Medicare card is usually mailed out 3 months prior to your birthday. Once your have your Medicare card or MBI number, you can contact me to enroll in a Medicare Health Insurance plan.
If you elect to delay drawing Social Security until after your 65th birthday you should apply for Medicare three months prior to your birthday month. You can apply by:
1) Contacting your local Social Security office to make an appointment; https://www.ssa.gov/locator/
2) Go to www.ssa.gov and click on Apply for Medicare and complete the online application.
If you are still covered by an Employer Plan past the age of 65, in some cases you only need to elect Part A. If you are losing Employer coverage & are beyond your 65th birthday, you may have a Special Election Period to apply for Parts A & B. For more information please contact me.
The Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare is October 15th-December 7th.
The Annual Enrollment Period for ACA (under 65) individual plans is November 1st-January 15th.
